Over time, it's much easier to appreciate what a superb job Damon did on the instrumentation of this track. We agree with his positive outlook (no doubt this is a moment of clarity for him). In this way, the audience is allowed to pity 2D, perhaps for the first time. Another existential comment I suppose: if everything has the same about of importance, and is constantly getting shoved in your face every moment of everyday, pretty soon you're going to exhaust yourself.ĢD's lyrics here are pretty powerful, but the album delivery is ironically understated and weak. A bit of a comment on the internet age, the sheer number of sources of excitement is slowly burning the wick out of the lantern for people. Notice Mos Def, playing the character of Sun, Moon & Stars (the Boogieman), is rapping what are apparently positive things, but instead is fueling evil in the world. What Stylo is actually trying to accomplish is what the entirety of Demon Days the album was about, it's trying to acknowledge a desolate state of being within the culture, the feeling of being under attack and on the run, while also acknowledging the source (Mos Def), the struggle (Bobby Womack) and the solution (2D). 2D's background on this record, as a slave, speaks to this state of being. This is partially out of design (getting rid of the riff raff, I belive it's called), it is a comment on the completely bleached and brainwashed state of music nowadays.

And of course Paul Simonon is playing the bass.īut on the record, it just doesn't feel as lively. Bobby Womack's '70s throwback induced vocal parts seem to be more wise, offering guidance, Mos Def, whose partnership with Damon goes back to Kid Koala's "Routine" gets to play the cunning villain with a little more flair, Damon gets to belt out "Sing yourself out of depression! Rise ABOVE!" like he's the greatest motivational speaker in the world. Live, the song is much less oppressive, and feels a lot more easy-going and breezy than on the studio track. While I personally understand the place where Damon was coming from here, the fact that this song, and not, say, Rhinestone Eyes, was the first single ended up being a terrible blow to the record's popularity. Instead of being a catchy, fun-filled genre-splice like everyone was expecting, the single was instead a not-immediately-catchy fun-filled genre-splice. Stylo, probably on purpose, was a very polarizing song among the fans. So, like any rational person, I figured that the song probably lost something in the conversion, decided I would withhold judgement until I managed to see the group live and forgot about it. When I first saw Stylo, as, keep in mind, I'd been waiting patiently for a new Gorillaz phase for quite some time at that point, I felt the bass synth hurt my ears and the song itself lacked any of the lavish soul I'd come to expect from the group. The exact meaning of what's going on seems to escape at times, but this little groove-blaster has the capacity, like the greatest of Gorillaz songs, to provide new experience every time it is listened to. Perhaps more than any of the others, Gorillaz at times feels like a score to something. Stylo feels like a film score of a '70s adventure film. Stylo is the first single off Plastic Beach, reintroducing the world to the famous cartoon band in a song that would not go on to be incredibly popular, and a video that seemed to confirm the band was essentially dead.Īlso, the music video, which actually was very popular, was so expensive that it effectively ended up destroying the budget for Phase III, leading to the story of Plastic Beach going unfinished.
